Our guttering work covers installation, repair, replacement, and cleaning. Fixing leaking joints and sagging sections before they pull away from the fascia. Replacing cracked, broken, or collapsed guttering and downpipes. Full gutter replacements on older properties moving from cast iron to uPVC, or repairing and painting existing cast iron runs where the property warrants it. Downpipe clearance where blockages are causing overflow. Leaf guard fitting to reduce the frequency of blockage-related maintenance.
Guttering work is often carried out alongside fascia and soffit replacement — we remove the guttering, replace the fascia boards, and refit the guttering as part of the same job. This avoids double-handling and is more cost-effective than treating them as separate visits. If you're planning fascia work, it's worth bundling guttering at the same time. See our fascias and soffits page for more on the roofline work we carry out.
Guttering is the only thing standing between your roof drainage and your walls. When gutters block or leak, water runs down the face of the building rather than being directed to the downpipes. Over time, this saturates the wall, leading to damp patches inside, staining on the outside, and in older properties, spalling brickwork and mortar deterioration. Ground splash from overflowing downpipes can saturate the soil around foundations, increasing damp penetration at slab level.
These problems develop gradually and aren't always immediately obvious — by the time interior damp shows up, water has usually been running incorrectly for months. A blocked gutter in autumn, when leaf fall is heaviest, is one of the most common causes of water damage we come across. Keeping gutters clear and joints sealed is one of the cheapest forms of property maintenance available.
Repairing a leaking joint or fitting a new section costs from around £50 to £150 depending on how many sections are involved and whether scaffolding or specialist access is needed. A full guttering replacement on a typical terraced or semi-detached — removing old guttering and downpipes and fitting new uPVC — typically ranges from £400 to £900 for a standard property. Larger detached homes or those requiring scaffolding rather than ladder access will sit higher.
Cast iron guttering — common on Victorian and Edwardian properties — costs more to repair and replace than uPVC, both in materials and labour. We'll advise on whether repair or replacement makes better sense for your specific property. A free estimate gives you a clear figure before any work is agreed.

Once or twice a year is the standard recommendation — autumn is the most important time, after leaves have fallen and before the heaviest winter rain. If your property is near trees, once a year in autumn alone may not be sufficient. A quick check in spring is good practice to catch any blockages that built up over winter and to inspect for joints that have pulled apart in the cold.
Signs that cleaning is overdue include water overflowing at the front of the gutter during rain (rather than from the downpipe), plants or moss growing in the gutter run, damp on the wall below the gutterline, and sagging where debris weight has pulled a section away from the fascia. We carry out gutter cleaning as a standalone service or as part of any repair visit.
For repair work, we start by checking the full run — not just the obviously faulty section. A leaking joint is easy to spot, but the cause is often a gutter that has fallen out of level or a loose bracket that's allowed the gutter to move. We check fall (the slight slope toward the downpipe), bracket fixing, joint seals, and outlet condition before deciding what repair approach is needed.
On replacement jobs, old guttering and downpipes are removed, the fascia board is checked for rot (and replaced if needed), and new guttering is fitted with correct falls and securely bracketed. All joints are sealed and the system tested with water before we sign off. Downpipes are run to existing soakaways or drainage points unless site conditions require something different.
